Gas Water Heater — Kansas City, MO — Affordable Plumbing & Sewer
We wanted to welcome you into the new year by teaching you to fix a gas water heater that is not working. We know this is a common question, and sometimes you can fix this issue yourself without having to call anyone. Here are a few simple tips on how to do just that.

Check The Issue Is With The Water Heater

You need first to make sure the issue is the water heater. Taking care of this is simple. All you need to do is check for hot water at all fixtures and faucets. If you can’t find hot water anywhere, the water heater is indeed the problem. Then you need to move on to the next steps.

Be Sure The Water Heater Is Turned On

Turn the gas control knob to pilot to prevent the burner from igniting when you’re looking inside. Remove the metal cover at the bottom of the water heater & check to see if the burner/pilot light are lit.

If Pilot Light Is Out

There should be instructions on the tank to relight it. It’s also possible the gas inlet valve has been partially or wholly closed. If so, turn the handle to the line so that it opens and relight the pilot light. If the pilot light won’t light, it’s either an issue with the thermocouple, which your gas utility company will likely replace (in some areas for free) for a water heater repair company.

If Burner Is Not On

Replace the cover and make sure the thermostat is adjusted to about 120 degrees. If it isn’t, adjust it, turn on a hot water faucet, and wait a few minutes to see if the burner ignites. If it does not, leave the water running and try raising the temperature setting on the dial until it does ignite.

If The Burner Ignites

Replace the cover & turn the thermostat back to an appropriate setting. If the burner doesn’t ignite, have it checked by an appliance repair person. It could be an issue with the thermostat, and that is best handled by a professional.

Smell For Gas

If you smell a garlic-like scent, turn the gas valve control to off. Wait until the gas smell has dissipated before relighting the pilot light. If the smell doesn’t go away, immediately turn off the gas supply valve, ventilate the area, and call a plumber or gas utility company from a remote location.
