Water pressure is one of those things that you don’t often think about, but can seriously change your quality of life. Speaking as a person who has lived with a sink that I had to wash dishes in with almost no water pressure, there are probably few who understand the pain better.
Not to mention the pain of a shower that can’t wash off your shampoo. Fortunately, low water pressure, most often, is an easy fix. Here are a few of the most common causes of low water pressure and what you can do to fix the issue.
A Valve Issue
If you have low water pressure in all fixtures in your home, check your
main shut-off valve
to ensure it’s completely open. There may also be a pressure reducing valve installed (this often happens in apartment complexes to save money on fixed water costs for tenants). If there is, have a plumber help you adjust it to the settings you’re looking for.
Debris Build-Up
If you notice that low water pressure is only coming from one or two fixtures in your home, the problem is likely debris build-up. Water is full of debris and minerals, which can accumulate in your pipes and on your fixtures.
All of this accumulation can cause a blockage that affects how much water gets through. To fix this problem, try filling a small plastic bag with white vinegar and use a rubber band (or some strong holding string tied very tightly) to hang it around your showerhead or faucet. Let the head of the fixture soak for a few hours, and the build-up should dissolve.
Others Using Water
Your neighbors can certainly cause low water pressure in your home. If you notice low water pressure at certain times of day, that is the best indicator; this is your most likely culprit. This is most common in the mornings when people are preparing for work.
This issue is most common in apartments, but it can happen in homes too. This could be an issue with your municipal water supply. It may be worth checking in with your local water supplier to see if there’s something that can be done about the issue if this applies to you.
Water Leaks
If water is leaking through a hole or crack before it can reach your fixture, the pressure coming out of that fixture will be lower. This issue is not one you should handle yourself, however. It is far too easy to cause damage to your pipes if you attempt an at-home fix, and this will cost you much more money in the long run.
